Ash’s red carpet worries

Tagged Under :

Ten years ago, in 2002, Aishwarya Rai graced the Cannes red carpet for the first time. And every year, she tried to put her best foot forward. But the fashion police had not relented.

Starting with her canary yellow saree and heavy gold jewellery, every single piece of designer garb that Ash has donned on the red carpet till date has been under a lot of scrutiny. And this year, the new mommy is sure to be at the centre of the fashion scanner.

While Ash’s personal styling (many expect the actress, who had been taking her time losing the post partum weight, to wear a saree) will undoubtedly be subjected to a lot of media glare, the actress will also have to vie with a lot of competition at the ceremony.

Firstly, there will be Sonam Kapoor. The actress, who was chosen as one of the celebrity faces for a beauty care brand in 2009, had to cancel her debut trip to France due to Aishwarya’s protestations. Sonam, who is already a name to reckon with in the fashion circuit, will be there to give the Cannes veteran stiff competition.

Secondly, there will be Mallika Sherawat. She made her Cannes debut in 2005, thanks to Jackie Chan starrer The Myth. Though her rather daring red carpet ensemble last year got the fashion critiques on a roll, this year the actress may turn over a new leaf.

Interestingly, we learnt from a person present on the sets of Kismat Luv Paisa Dilli, the Mallika SherawatVivek Oberoi starrer, that if things go as planned, director Sanjay Khanduri, producer Amit Chandrra and lead actor Vivek may join Mallika at Cannes. Needless to say, this may add to Ash’s discomfort.

However, Ash may still manage to win hearts by tugging along her little one to the red carpet. According to sources in the industry, the actress, who had taken her husband Abhishek Bachchan to Cannes the year she tied the knot in 2007, and the entire Bachchan parivaar (including good friend Amar Singh) in 2008, may have to take Beti B Aaradhya along. And if that happens, it’s not just the fashion police the actress will have to fend off.

Chidambaram turns emotional, says ‘stab me, but don’t question my integrity’

Tagged Under :

NEW DELHI: Stating that neither he or his family had any connection with Aircel or any other telecom company, an emotional home minister P Chidambaram on Monday said: “Plunge a dagger in my heart rather than question my integrity.”

He was giving a clarification in the Rajya Sabha on allegations that his son’s company was transferred money, before the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) cleared a proposal from Aircel pertaining to its telecom service venture in 2006.

Chidambaram, who was finance minister at that time, said there were no illegitimate transfers were made to any company involving any of his family members. “Neither I, nor any member of my family has any equity in any telecom company.”

The issue was raised in the upper house by leader of opposition Arun Jaitley. He did not take any names, but alluded that Oxbridge — in which Advantage Consultancy, partly owned by Chidambaram’s son Karthi — received money from Aircel.

Seeking to give more details, Kaitley said Maxis, the Malaysian company which acquired shares in Aircel, had declared to Malaysian stock exchange that it acquired more than 99 percent shares in Aircel.

But the Indian policy permits no more than 74 percent share to foreign investors in telecom ventures. The money was allegedly transferred by Aircel chief C Sivasankaran on the eve of FICB clearance to the Aircel-Maxis deal.

The home minister, however, said his “family” had nothing to do with Oxbridge.

“It is true my son had shares in Advantage consultancy. But young men have all the right to a start business. He invested Rs 1.8 lakh in the company, which had another share holder — Rajesh,” the home minister said.

The minister, however, said Karthi had sold his share in the firm to his friend and has no holdings in the company. He further clarified that Advantage took shares in Oxbridge only in 2011, much after the 2006 clearance to the Aircel-Maxis deal.

The leader of opposition questioned how both Oxbridge and Advantage had the same e-mail address in 2006, to which Chidambaram said he was not aware “if they shared the same web address”.

“I don’t deny that the promoters of Oxbridge and Advantage did know each other. All are doing business in Chennai,” he said.

He also said whether or not the Malaysian company gave wrong information to some other country could be examined by the finance ministry. But the FIPB gave its clearance in 2006 for a stake below 74 percent.

He also dismissed allegations for delaying the process of clearance.

Dalai Lama gives Templeton Prize money to Indian charity

Tagged Under :

LONDON: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Monday received the prestigious 1.1 million pound Templeton Prize here and announced that most of the prize money will go to ‘Save the Children’ fund in India.

Speaking at the St Paul’s Cathedral where he received the prize, 76-year-old Dalai Lama said that most of the prize money will go to the ‘Save the Children’ fund in India, with smaller bequests to a science and religion group which is studying the effects of Buddhist practice and to a project to train Buddhist monks as scientists.

About 900,000 pounds will go to ‘Save the Children’, an Indian NGO that works for child rights, with 125,000 pounds set aside for ‘The Minds and Life Institute’, a US based non-profit organisation. Money will also go towards a fund to educate Tibetan monks about science.

Dalai Lama, who leads a Tibetan government in exile in India, is being awarded the prize for encouraging “serious scientific investigative reviews of the power of compassion”, and its potential to address world problems.

The John Templeton Foundation said he was chosen for exploring these issues, which are key themes of his teachings, with people beyond his own religious traditions.

It is the 40th anniversary of the Templeton Prize, which was established in 1972 as a global award honouring a living person who affirms “life’s spiritual dimension”, whether through insight, discovery, or practical works.

“With an increasing reliance on technological advances to solve the world’s problems, humanity also seeks the reassurance that only a spiritual quest can answer,” Dr John Templeton, president of the foundation and son of the late prize founder said.

“The Dalai Lama offers a universal voice of compassion underpinned by a love and respect for spiritually relevant scientific research that centres on every single human being,” he added.

Infosys’ management wage bill crosses $10m mark

Tagged Under :

BANGALORE: IT behemoth Infosys paid its top management a total remuneration of $10.7 million (over Rs 50 crore) during the last financial year, registering a 52% increase over the previous year, the company said in an annual regulatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The Bangalore-headquartered IT firm said the remuneration paid to its key management personnel, which includes directors and executive council members, had remained almost unchanged at about $7 million for the last two fiscals (2009-10 and 2010-11 ).

Stephen R Pratt, executive council member of Infosys, was the top paid executive with a total compensation package of $2 million in the last fiscal. B G Srinivas, who now heads the BFSI vertical, was paid $1.19 million as compensation, while Ashok Vemuri, the global head of manufacturing and engineering services units at Infosys, was paid $1.18 million. Infosys effected a key leadership reshuffle in February where two of its “CEO-material” leaders, Vemuri and B G Srinivas, interchanged their current roles and swapped their operating domains with effect from April 1, 2012.

Despite a sharp increase in compensation last fiscal, individual pay packages of some of the top management executives shrank to a large extent- including executive cochairman S Gopalakrishnan, CEO S D Shibulal and chief financial officer V Balakrishnan -shrank to a large extent.

Shibulal’s package was reduced by about $80,000 to $1,62,990 in 2011-12, while Gopalakrishnan’s remuneration fell by about $85,000 to $1,64,543 in the same period.

However, K V Kamath’s compensation rose to $2,05,000 from $1,25,600, a 63% increase in the total package over the 2011 fiscal. Kamath took charge as the chairman of the board in August 2011, but has served as an independent director since May 2009.

Infosys chief mentor N R Narayana Murthy, who retired from the board in August last year, was paid $67,100 as compensation, down from $137,500 in the previous fiscal.

The company said that a committee determines and recommends the compensation payable to the directors and shareholders approve all board-level compensation packages. Remuneration of the executive directors consists of fixed component, bonus and a variable performance-linked incentive. All its executive directors are entitled to a bonus of up to 20% of their fixed salary, as also the incentives linked to the company’s and individual performances. The compensation committee makes a half-yearly appraisal of the performance of the employee directors.

“We have a variable compensation structure for all of our employees . Our board aligned the compensation structure of our employee directors in line with that applicable to all of our other employees,” it said.
